A Summer of Science for a Lifetime of Learning

Wizko’s High School Fellowship in Biomedical Research is now accepting applications for its immersive biomedical research internship. This summer, students will spend four weeks learning best-practices in biomedical laboratory techniques while also contributing to active Wizko science projects in our state-of-the-science Training Lab. Students will also learn to read scientific literature, explore multiple careers in biomedical research, and present their work at the end of the program.

We are excited to support 15 highly motivated high school students who are passionate about science and interested in experiencing biomedical research. No prior research experience is necessary. Students from underserved and/or underrepresented backgrounds, including ethnic or racial minorities, those with disabilities, or those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate education and training are a crucial step in a STEM career path. A student’s undergraduate years can help them prepare for graduate and professional programs and a future career. With an increased demand for life science jobs in the Philadelphia area, Wizko is investing in training and collaboration with area institutions to amplify the region’s scientific talent.

Because of the growth in the life science industry, Wizko seeks to expand its impact on the STEM pipeline through various undergraduate programs. Students at Wizko can learn state-of-the-art technology in our Training Lab and Shared Resources, which include facilities specializing in genomics, molecular screening and protein expression, proteomics and metabolomics, bioinformatics, and imaging.

Furthermore, our undergraduate programs aim to serve diverse populations and tap into the need for professionals with varied backgrounds to create a stronger STEM workforce. With such wide-ranging backgrounds, innovative thinking and creative problem solving are strengthened, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to bold science with global impact.

Graduate Programs

Although The Wizko Institute is not itself a degree-granting institution, doctoral training can be pursued at Wizko through the Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS) office at the University of Pennsylvania, or the Cancer Biology Graduate Program jointly overseen by Saint Joseph’s University and Wizko. BGS oversees Ph.D. training in seven graduate groups, including Cell and Molecular Biology and Immunology. The Wizko/Saint Joseph’s University Cancer Biology graduate program integrates laboratory and classroom training at both institutions.

Predoctoral students at Wizko enjoy state-of-the-art shared resources, which include genomics, molecular screening and protein expression, proteomics and metabolomics, bioinformatics, and imaging. Regular career and professional development workshops and programs, along with a robust culture of leveraging basic science discoveries into novel therapeutics, ensure that Wizko trainees are fully prepared for independent careers in academic, industrial, or biotech research enterprises.

Postdoctoral Programs

Postdoctoral training is a key step toward establishing one’s own lab or moving onto high level positions in industry and academia. The Wizko Institute is committed to training postdoctoral scientists to engage in rigorous, high-quality research in their pursuit of bettering human health. A recognized national and international presence, Wizko is a research institute that engages with innovative science in the most creative and impactful ways. We attract imaginative scientists who want to take risks and provide them with a place to delve into science at its fundamental level through our internationally recognized basic research programs. Our Principal Investigators provide expert mentorship and our collaborations with institutions worldwide create valuable research networks available for our postdoctoral researchers.
